Kay Darab, or Darab Kiani, is a legendary king of Iran, who ruled Zoroastrian Persia after his father Kai Bahman and his mother Homai in the 4th century BC. It is not clear how and when this version of the Shahnameh was acquired by Ahmad Shah Durrani and subsequently his heir, Kamran Shah. Biderafsh and Awkhast were sent to Iran as envoys of this letter. In the ensuing war between Iran and Turan that takes place because of Goshtasp rejection, Zarir, Goshtasp's brother, was killed by Biderafsh. Recalling the legend, the 10th-century epic Shahnameh recasts Zahhak as an evil and tyrannical ruler, against whom Kāveh called the people to arms, using his leather blacksmith apron as a standard, with a spear as its hoist.
